Sutherland courthouse is a purpose-built dual court and police complex on Flora Street, opened in 1989. Both the Local Court and the District Court sit at this location, making it one of the few courthouses in Sydney where serious indictable matters can be heard locally rather than being sent to the CBD. The courthouse is next to Sutherland Police Station and a short walk from Sutherland Station on the T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra Line. AVL facilities are available. Limited street parking is available, with council car parks and parking at Sutherland Station nearby.

Sutherland Criminal Lawyers for the Shire

Sutherland Local Court is the primary courthouse for the Sutherland Shire, serving one of the largest and most self-contained local government areas in Sydney. The Shire covers roughly 370 square kilometres from Taren Point and Sylvania in the north to Waterfall and the Royal National Park in the south, and from Cronulla's beaches in the east to Menai and Alfords Point in the west. It is a predominantly residential area with more than 230,000 residents, and Sutherland Court is the only courthouse serving this entire community.

The types of charges that come through Sutherland Court reflect the Shire's character. Drink driving is consistently one of the most common offences, often connected to Cronulla's beachside restaurants, surf clubs, and entertainment strip along The Kingsway. Drug possession, assault charges, domestic violence matters, and shoplifting from Westfield Miranda also feature regularly on the list.

Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers know this court and the community it serves.

Local Court and District Court at the Same Courthouse

Sutherland is one of the few courthouses in Sydney where both the Local Court and the District Court sit at the same location. This is a real practical advantage for Shire residents. When a serious matter is committed for trial, it stays at Sutherland rather than being transferred to the Downing Centre District Court in the CBD. You attend the same courthouse you already know, and your legal team can manage both the Local Court and District Court stages of your case in one location.

Serious indictable offences including commercial drug supply, sexual assault, wounding with intent, armed robbery, and other District Court matters can all proceed to trial at Sutherland.

Criminal Offences Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers Defend

Assault Charges

Assault offences at Sutherland are connected to incidents at Cronulla's entertainment venues, Miranda's commercial strips, and domestic settings across the Shire. Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers defend common assault, assault occasioning ABH, assaulting a police officer, affray, choking, and recklessly causing GBH.

Domestic Violence & AVOs

Domestic violence matters are a significant part of the Sutherland court list. We represent clients charged with breaching an ADVO and stalking or intimidation. If you have been served with a provisional AVO or charged with a breach of AVO, contact us before your Sutherland court date.

Drug Offences

Drug charges at Sutherland range from personal-use drug possession at beach gatherings and social events to drug supply, cultivation, and ongoing supply. For personal-use possession, our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers push for diversion or a section 10 dismissal to protect your record.

Sexual Offences

We defend charges of sexual touching, aggravated sexual touching, distributing intimate images, threatening to distribute intimate images, and child abuse material. Strictly indictable sexual offences proceed to trial at Sutherland District Court.

Property & Fraud

Property offences include larceny and retail theft from Westfield Miranda, Cronulla Plaza, and local shops, break and enter, destroying property, and trespass. Fraud charges include obtaining a financial advantage by deception and goods in custody.

Firearms, Weapons & Public Order

Firearm and weapon charges include unlawful firearm possession and knife possession. Public order charges include offensive language, offensive conduct, and resisting arrest, often connected to Cronulla's beachside precinct and entertainment areas.

Traffic Offences at Sutherland Local Court

Traffic and driving offences are a large part of the Sutherland court list. The Shire is a car-dependent area. While Sutherland and Cronulla are well-served by the T4 train line, suburbs like Menai, Bangor, Alfords Point, Barden Ridge, Sylvania Waters, and much of the western Shire have no rail access at all. Residents in these areas rely on their vehicle for everything. The Princes Highway, Captain Cook Drive, Taren Point Road, the Old Princes Highway, and Heathcote Road are all major corridors through the Shire. RBT and mobile drug testing stations operate regularly on these roads and around Cronulla's entertainment strip on Friday and Saturday nights. Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers defend:

Losing a licence in the Shire creates real hardship, especially for residents in the western suburbs with no train access. Getting from Menai or Alfords Point to work in the CBD or Parramatta without a car is extremely difficult. Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers prepare detailed submissions explaining these practical difficulties to the magistrate. Where your licence has been suspended or cancelled, we also assist with licence appeals.

Bail Applications at Sutherland

If you or a family member has been arrested and refused police bail in the Sutherland Shire, our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers can make an urgent bail application at Sutherland Local Court. We are available 24/7 for urgent bail matters, including weekends and public holidays.

The Bail Act 2013 requires the court to weigh the seriousness of the offence, the strength of the prosecution case, and any risks to the community. Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers prepare bail applications supported by accommodation details, employment references, and proposed conditions that address every concern raised by the prosecution. Where bail is refused at the Local Court, we can make a fresh application at Sutherland District Court or the Supreme Court of NSW.

District Court Trials at Sutherland

Because the District Court sits at Sutherland, serious indictable matters committed from the Local Court can proceed to trial at the same courthouse. This is different from most Sydney Local Courts where committals are transferred to the Downing Centre District Court in the city.

Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers handle cases at both the Local Court and District Court level. We manage the committal process, case conferences with the Crown, pre-trial applications, and the trial itself. Having both courts at the same location means less disruption for you and a smoother process overall.

Mental Health Applications (Section 14) at Sutherland

A Section 14 mental health application under the Mental Health and Cognitive Impairment Forensic Provisions Act 2020 allows the court to divert your matter out of the criminal justice system and into treatment. This is available where a diagnosed mental health condition or cognitive impairment was connected to the offending behaviour.

Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers coordinate with treating psychiatrists, psychologists, and GPs to build a thorough package of clinical evidence and a treatment plan for the magistrate. Sutherland Hospital and the Shire's network of community mental health services support these applications.

Your Options When You Hire Sutherland Criminal Lawyers

The right strategy depends on the evidence and what is personally at stake. When you retain our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers, we obtain the police brief, review every piece of evidence, and advise on the strongest path forward:

Negotiate with the prosecution. Many charges can be withdrawn or downgraded through direct discussions with the police prosecutor before the matter is called. Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers pursue this on every case where it is viable.

Plead not guilty and defend the charges. If the prosecution evidence is weak, if there are legal defences available, or if police have not followed proper procedure, we take the matter to a defended hearing and challenge the case against you.

Plead guilty and minimise the penalty. An early guilty plea attracts a sentencing discount of up to 25%. Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers prepare detailed submissions, gather character references, and organise supporting material to give you the best chance of a non-conviction outcome or the lightest sentence available.

Run a disputed facts hearing. If you accept the charge but disagree with the police version of events, we can challenge the facts so that you are sentenced on a fair and accurate basis.

Seek diversion. For appropriate matters, we apply for a Section 14 mental health diversion, a conditional release order, or other non-conviction pathways. These can keep a conviction off your record and address the issues that led to the charge.

Why Choose Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers

We appear at Sutherland Court regularly.

Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers know how proceedings run at this courthouse, the magistrates who sit at Sutherland, and the Crown Prosecutors who appear at the District Court level. That working knowledge helps us prepare more effectively and get results.

We handle both Local Court and District Court matters at Sutherland.

Because Sutherland has both courts on site, we represent you from the first mention at the Local Court through to trial at the District Court. One legal team across both jurisdictions at the same courthouse.

We cover every suburb in the Shire.

Whether you were charged in Cronulla, Miranda, Engadine, Menai, Caringbah, Heathcote, or anywhere else in the Sutherland Shire, your matter is listed at Sutherland Court and we are there to represent you.

Criminal and traffic law is our entire practice.

We are a specialist criminal defence firm. Every case we take is a criminal or traffic matter. That focus means you get a lawyer with deep expertise, not a generalist handling criminal work on the side.

We understand how licence loss hits the Shire.

Large parts of the Sutherland Shire have no rail access. Residents in suburbs like Menai, Bangor, Alfords Point, and Barden Ridge depend on a car for work and daily life. Our licence hardship submissions explain these realities to the court.

Available around the clock.

We take calls 24/7, including weekends and public holidays. If you have been arrested in the Shire and refused bail, call us immediately for urgent legal advice and representation at Sutherland Court.

Transparent fixed fees.

We quote a fixed fee upfront so there are no surprises. You will know exactly what your representation costs before you commit.

Phone and video conferences available.

Given the travel distance from our Norwest office, we regularly arrange pre-court conferences by phone or video for Shire clients. On court day, we meet you at the courthouse.

What to Expect at Sutherland Court

If you have not been to court before, here is what to expect on the day:

1
Arrive at least 30 minutes early.

Sutherland Court has security screening at the entrance. Allow time to clear security and find your courtroom before your matter is called.

We will go over the strategy, explain what will happen, and answer any final questions. If there are discussions to be had with the prosecutor, we handle that before the matter goes before the magistrate or judge.

In most matters, your Sutherland Criminal Lawyers will address the magistrate or judge for you. You may need to confirm your plea and acknowledge any orders, but the lawyer does the talking.

6

Sutherland Criminal Lawyers for the Entire Sutherland Shire

The Sutherland Shire is one of Sydney's most geographically distinctive areas. Bounded by the Georges River and Botany Bay to the north, the Pacific Ocean and Bate Bay to the east, Port Hacking and the Royal National Park to the south, and the Woronora River to the west, the Shire has a strong sense of local identity. The commercial centres at Sutherland, Miranda, Cronulla, Caringbah, Menai, and Engadine each serve different parts of this large area.

Many clients at Sutherland Court are people with no prior criminal history. A drink driving charge after dinner in Cronulla, a drug possession charge from a weekend gathering, or a domestic violence matter after a family dispute can land anyone in court for the first time. Our Sutherland Criminal Lawyers are experienced at representing first-time offenders and working toward outcomes that protect your record, your career, and your licence.
